Book Review: The Host

I can honestly not believe that i managed to read an 830 page book in not even two complete days. I mean all in all it was more days, because i did not read this book on following days, but i started it sometime last week and finished it today. So i read in total 2 days. Which is pretty good i think. I just wanted to share that. Because, proud accomplishment here.

And now on to the actual review.

Which is spoilery. So be warned that i actually talk about what happens throughout this book!

Title: The Host
Author: Stephenie Meyer
Language: English
Type of book: Paperback
Pages: 864 pages  but actually the story only goes to 830 something so...
Overall rating: between 3 and 4 stars out of 5
Book series: Yeah i have no idea. Apparently it is from a series but nobody knows and nobody tells me anything like that so who knows?
Book received through: Library
Summary on the book:
"Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts, while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body didN#t expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to year for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love."
Worth reading?
Mhm... read my full review and make up your own mind!

I heard mostly fantastic things about this book.
And i never read anything by Meyer before and i did not want to try Twilight.
And i also never read an Alien book before.

So i really had no idea what to expect and did go into this book with very little exception.

Which i actually think was good for this book.

Overall the book was pretty good.

I enjoyed some parts, i felt with the character in others.

I really liked Wanderer or Wanda and i did enjoy Ian.

And Jamie was just a cutie. And Uncle Jed was perfect in his unique way and exactly what the story needed.

I did not like Melanie or Jared. They were both just very selfish and mean in most aspects in my eyes. And just very violent and all this "she is mine!" "He is mine!" stuff just got on my nerves. And the entire jealousy think while it is the same body and in a way the mind? Did not understand that at all!

I also did not understand how this can count as a love triangle when there are actually four people in that whole shebang. But there really is no good literary word for that one yet, so i can understand why they say it is a triangle instead.

But lets start at the beginning.

The book starts with when Wanderer is implanted into Melanie and more or less just throws the reader into this different world right away. Which i personally really liked. Because we kind of learn what is going on and how everything has changed and why it changed with or through Wanderer and i did enjoy that.

And i really liked the Wanderer moments, when she was just trying to find her place and figure out what was going on and what she was supposed to do.

I hated Melanie because she was ... for a lack of any kind of better term ... a bitch. She was mean spirited and did nothing to help. And i understand. Yes her body was taken over and that is horrible. But she was still there. She might not have control over the body, but she was there. So why not make it clear that Wanderer would be better with her there instead of doing everything so that Wanderer wanted to get Melanie out of that body completely? I did not understand that.

Melanie was just extremely annoying to me, especially in those moments were she was unnecessary mean to Wanda. She made her fall in love with Jared and then gets jealous if Wanda likes Jared or thinks about him? I can not wrap my head about that aspect of this story.

The method of getting Wanderer to go to the other humans and all that was alright.

The section of the humans was... different but still acceptable. I found the violence a bit extreme to be honest, but that might just be me and i hadn't expected this book to have so many situations were people get beaten up simply because it seems that someone wanted to get a good beating out of their system.

Or how many of them didn't even try to understand what Wanderer or Wanda really were and that she was a really nice and fantastic person -other then ian that is.

I already stated that i did not understand this extreme hero-worship of Jared and personally i think that the extreme reaction and not wanting to at least see if Melanie was still in her body somewhere or how Wanderer even knew where to find them and why he was not one of the first people to be on her side, if he "loved" her that much is mind-boggling to me. If you love a person you help them. Don't you?

Most of the love relationship in this book were just wrong for me. And i don't know if that was on purpose to showcase why the Aliens saw the need to invade or just Meyer's way of writing a relationship since i heard a lot about how wrong the Twilight relationship was as well. So maybe she just has a .... different kind of view on relationships. I have no idea.

Overall after having read this book i honestly have no idea if i enjoyed it or not.
Some parts were really good and i liked those.
But other parts where horrible and i really had to pull myself together to not just give up and put this book down.
Some characters were wonderful, while others did deserve to have their bodies taken over because their mindsets were not needed!
I did enjoy the ending and liked the solution of the entire situation. i do however do not think that more books are needed. For me this story has been finished and now people and think for themselves how it will go on. But maybe that is just me.

Did you read this book? What did you think?

Did you ever read a book and just did not know if you liked it or not?

Let me know.

Write more later....

  1. Great review. I didn’t like Twilight, so I’ve never read this series, but a lot of people say that this series is much better than Twilight. Aliens do sound more interesting to me than vampires.
